Southern Rural Water is responsible for rural water supply across the entire southern part of Victoria, from the Great Divide to the coast. Its customers are principally the farmers, graziers and growers of southern Victoria, but the company also supplies water in bulk to non-metropolitan urban water authorities and to Latrobe Valley electricity generators. Southern Rural Water manages the state’s largest groundwater operation and its second largest non-metropolitan headworks business.

“Field workers with dial-up connections to head office could use the browser interface for quick and simple access to the Enterprise Content Management, DataWorks (ECM) repository. At the same time office workers had access to ECM from the desktop, so we didn’t have to compromise on giving our staff access to the system based on their location. A major upgrade of our network before the end of the year will give greater capability for access wherever our staff are located,”  said Vere Gray, Executive Assistant/Authority Secretary.

“Just to give you an example, yesterday I was pulling together some budgeting information for the forthcoming year and doing a training needs analysis. Last time I didn’t even have this kind of information, so the budget was still an educated guess. Using this new system I was able to run a report and had the information in front of me in about 10 minutes. I knew exactly what the position requirements were and which staff had training requirements," said David Jordan, HR Manager.
